Cast iron

5.Rust spots

Cause: moisture sitting on bare iron, often from being left wet or soaked.

Fix: scrub the rust off with steel wool or a cast-iron-specific rust eraser, wash, dry completely, then re-season with a thin layer of oil.

Enameled cast iron

9.Chipped or cracked enamel

Cause: usually a sudden temperature change (thermal shock, like adding cold liquid to a very hot pot) or a hard impact from metal utensils or being knocked against a hard surface.

Fix: a small cosmetic chip on the exterior doesn't affect cooking. A chip on the cooking surface that exposes the bare cast iron underneath is different: avoid cooking acidic or long-simmered food directly over that spot, since bare iron isn't protected there the way it is elsewhere on the pot.
